Leadership Recognition

Leadership Recognition

“Leadership in the OCDSB is the demonstration of personal initiative to achieve a positive outcome.”

Students

Our Student Council is comprised of student leaders from junior and intermediate classrooms. Student Council provides input for our school-wide events and fundraising for the school and the community. Our Spirit Committee organizes Spirit Days. These special days highlight our school colors, Literacy and Reading initiatives, and special events, etc. In 2013, we raised money for cancer research through our Terry Fox Run. Volunteers are also an essential part of our daily milk program and breakfast club. With their leadership, these programs are a success. Our students continue to show leadership in sports, as well as demonstrating good sportsmanship. In addition to informal recognition on a regular basis, we also acknowledge student contributions in our classrooms, school announcements, newsletters, assemblies, our Principal’s and Vice-Principal’s reports to School Council and during end-of-year award ceremonies. We recognize student leadership and incorporate student suggestions into our planning.

Staff

Our staff members have a wealth of professional qualifications including Bachelors and Masters degrees in Arts, Fine Arts, Physical Education and Sciences, as well as additional qualifications in Special Education, Music, Visual Arts, Guidance, Physical Education, French Second Language and Computers in Education. Our staff has actively participated in numerous Board-wide and in-school professional development activities in literacy, numeracy, character development, and assessment and evaluation. We recognize their initiative by providing and supporting opportunities for further professional growth. We also recognize staff leadership via personal interactions with one another, letters of thanks, school announcements, school newsletters, assemblies, performance appraisals, and through our Principal’s report to school council.

Parents/Guardians/Volunteers

MPS volunteers contribute an amazing amount of time and dedication that not only allows our school spirit to flourish, but also enables our students to benefit from additional resources. Volunteer involvement ranges from participating in field trips, providing one-on-one assistance in the classrooms, and beautifying our school grounds. MPS has a very active School Council who support student learning by fostering a strong partnership between the students, parents, teachers, community, and government. Our School Council organizes a variety of programs which include Hot Lunches, the annual Jingle Bells Bazaar and a Dance-a-thon for our students. Our Council’s past success at raising funds has also directly contributed to the purchase of sports equipment, library furniture, English and French resources, electronic and art equipment, take-home books, and play structures, just to mention a few. MPS volunteers play an integral role in our school’s success. We recognize and thank parents, guardians and volunteers through our newsletter, announcements, assemblies, and during our annual volunteer appreciation breakfast.

Community

Our school, district, and School Council has collaborated with community partners to raise funds for a new play structure with accessibility for all students. Staff continues to generously support the United Way. We hold an annual trike race that raises student generated funds for this worthwhile cause. We also hold a food drive in December to support our local food bank. Our School Resource Officer, Constable McKale, is a support to our school. Tasha’s Fine Foods supports Metcalfe P.S. through Adopt-A-School, which provides our students with tickets to all Ottawa 67’s home games. We recognize our community partners through our school announcements, school newsletters, assemblies, school website, and Principal’s Report to school council, as well as our Volunteer Breakfast. Community members are always welcome at events, awards ceremonies, and the Grade 8 Leaving Ceremony
